The countries that put their own photo on the wall

The countries that put their own photo on the wall

Every customer who buys a paint by numbers kit from us makes the same choice: pick a design that already exists, or upload a photo of your own and have it turned into a kit. We looked at every kit ordered in the twelve months to 31 July 2026 across 36 markets, and counted which of the two options people chose. The result is a map of where in the world people put something of their own on the wall, measured from what people bought, not from what they told a survey they intended to buy.

Italy is first in Europe, and it is not close. 62.5% of the kits Italians buy are made from their own photo. In Britain and the United States the figure is 25.3%: two and a half times lower, and joint-last of the 36 markets we can report on.

The top of the table is Mediterranean

Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece take four of the top six places in Europe, and together they run at 57.0%. The four largest English-speaking markets (the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand) run at 25.6% between them. Roughly speaking, a household in southern Europe is more than twice as likely to hang a picture of its own people as a household in the English-speaking world.

Whether that is about family, about how a home is decorated, or about what counts as a serious gift, the data cannot say. What it can say is that the gap is large, consistent, and not the one the market forecasts describe.

Ireland is the exception that breaks the pattern

If this were a story about the English language, Ireland would sit with Britain. It does not. At 49.7% Ireland is closer to Portugal than to the country next door, and it is the only major English-speaking market anywhere near the Mediterranean rate. Whatever separates Britain at 25.3% from Ireland at 49.7%, it is not the language they share.

There is a smaller version of the same surprise in central Europe. Austria runs at 48.3% and Germany at 32.4%, half again as high, in the same language, from the same catalogue.

What people actually order

The two options behind these numbers are ordinary ones. On one side, a paint by numbers chosen from a catalogue of ready-made designs. On the other, a custom kit made from a photograph the buyer uploads: a family, a couple, a pet, a house. The large custom kit is the same idea at a size meant for a wall rather than a shelf, and it is the version that tends to be bought as a gift rather than as something to do on a wet afternoon.

For anyone who cannot decide which side of this table they fall on, a gift card leaves the choice to the person receiving it.

Method

Every paint by numbers kit ordered in the twelve months to 31 July 2026 is included: every order in the window, not a sample and not a survey. Each kit is either made from a photograph the buyer uploaded or chosen from the ready-made catalogue, and the figure reported is the first as a share of both.

The window is twelve whole months and it is identical for every market. That matters more than it sounds: the personalised share is strongly seasonal, running near 30% in spring and above 50% in January, so any window shorter than a year ranks countries by whose season it happens to be rather than by how they behave.

Accessories, frames and digital files are excluded from both sides of the fraction: they are not a choice between personalised and ready-made. Markets are included only where we had enough kits for the percentage to mean something; smaller markets are excluded rather than reported on thin data.

Uploaded photographs are never examined individually. This study counts only which of the two options a buyer chose, and reports nothing whatsoever about the content of any image.
