Screen vs. Canvas
Color Difference Explained
Why digital and physical colors differ
Screen vs Paint Colors
A screen builds color out of light it emits — red, green and blue, mixed and aimed straight at your eye. A painting has no light of its own: the acrylic in each numbered pot can only send back a share of the light already in your room. The same color delivered two different ways cannot land identically.
Technical reasons for color variations
Why This Happens
Color perception varies based on lighting, screen calibration, and the physical properties of paint. What you see on a backlit screen will always differ somewhat from pigments on canvas viewed under ambient light.
Screens glow. Canvas doesn't.
Your monitor and your phone emit light directly at you, which makes colors read brighter and more intense than any surface can manage. Paint has no light of its own — it can only reflect back part of the light in the room.
Light mixes differently from pigment.
Mixing light adds brightness; mixing pigment takes it away. The most vivid colors a screen can show — electric blues, neon greens — have no acrylic equivalent, so we match them to the closest paint in the palette.
Your room has a say.
A warm bulb, north-facing daylight and an evening lamp each pull the same finished canvas in a different direction. Screen brightness and calibration move the other half of the comparison just as much.
How your photo becomes a painting
Image to Painting
When we convert your photo into a paint by numbers kit, we match your image colors to our available paint palette. The number of colors affects the final result:
- 24 colors - Great for simpler images with fewer details
- 36 colors - Ideal balance of detail and ease of painting
- 48 colors - Maximum detail for complex images
More colors mean more detail but also more complexity in painting.

What to Expect
Minor color variations between your screen and the final painting are normal and expected. These differences often enhance the artistic quality of your finished piece.
If you have concerns about significant color discrepancies, please contact our support team with photos of your completed painting.
Please note that slight color differences are not grounds for refunds, as they are inherent to the nature of converting digital images to physical paintings.
